In July 2010 mother-of-three Heidi Sand was diagnosed with colon cancer. Unfazed by the seriousness of her situation, she made the decision not to give herself up; her natural reaction instead was to set ambitious goals for her future. In 2012, only one and a half years after the devastating diagnosis, mountaineer and sculptor Heidi Sand reached the summit of Mount Everest.
Heidi has since reached the summit of Cho Oyu in Tibet without supplementary oxygen and has become the first German woman to reach the summit of Makalu in Nepal. Other climbing highlights include Mera Peak in Nepal and Mount Denali in North America (with skis) and Elbrus in Caucasus. In the Alps she has summited Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Weißhorn, Finsteraarhorn, Dufourspitze, Täschhorn, Klein Grünhorn and Groß Grünhorn, and Wetterhorn.
